would like to invite you to the international conference

Castrum Bene 2023: Castle and Law,

held in Pilsen between 4 and 8 September 2023.
The conference is also co-organized by the Department of the English Language and Literature and the Department of German and Slavonic Studies of the Faculty of Arts, as well as by the Music Education and Culture Department of the Pedagogical Faculty of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.

A thematically broad international interdisciplinary conference focused on the issue of fortified settlements and their connection with medieval and early modern law. The following topics will be discussed in particular:

  • the castle and the manor in property law context,
  • the building form of the castle and its connection with property relations,
  • the castle as a place of creation and exercise of law,
  • the castle and its function in ensuring security,
  • the castle as an administrative centre,
  • the castle as an object of dispute and its resolution,
  • construction, demolition, and appearance of the castle in the light of contemporary law,
  • legal issues related to the castle as a residential, fortification, and sacral object,
  • the castle in the context of settlement structure,
  • current findings from the field of European castellalogy.


The aim of the conference is to allow the speakers to present the results of their current research while providing a platform for the broadest possible gathering of experts interested in castellology, history of law, and related fields. The expected length of the conference papers is about 15 min. Languages: German and English.

Please submit your written contributions for publication by 31 December 2023 to cabe@kar.zcu.cz.

Application forms will be available electronically from February to the end of April 2023. Please send abstracts of your presentations to cabe@kar.zcu.cz by April 30, 2023.

Conference fee: 90 EUR
Students: 50 EUR

Accommodation is not provided or paid for. We recommend hotels in the city centre - an overview is available, for example, at https://www.visitplzen.eu/ubytovani/. It is also possible to use hotel-type accommodation at the dormitories of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (1 night / 2 persons per room/ 350 CZK/approx. 15 EUR; 1 night / 1 person per room/ 730 CZK/approx. 30 EUR.
